It’s been a week of new coaching hires at ETSU and UT and the same is true for Johnson County.
Thomas Wampler was named head girls’ basketball coach on Friday, replacing Todd Whittemore who resigned on Thursday.
The search for a new girls’ basketball coach took less than 24 hours. Efforts to find out if the job had been posted proved unsuccessful.
Wampler had just accepted the boys’ head coaching job at the middle school. But that changed with the departure of Whittemore.
“They came to me on Thursday and told me Coach Whittemore had resigned,” said Wampler. “They asked me if I was interested. It basically wasn’t a hard decision. Kourtney Tolley and I had talked about the possibility if this happened when I took the middle school job. The two of us already had a basis to start talking about it if it came up.”

Wampler previously stated that he had enjoyed his one year on the bench with Whittemore.
“Coaching the girls was rewarding this year,” stated Wampler. “We accomplished a lot although our record might not have shown it. I saw every kid improve on that team.”
At some point fans are hoping that improvement shows in wins and losses. The Longhorns were 2-22 this year and haven’t made the regional tournament since the mid 90’s.
