The hiring of Brock Pittman at Sullivan East High School might not ring a bell to Johnson County residents but it will certainly make a difference on the football field.
Pittman coached Cloudland to four playoff appearances and a 34-13 record during his four seasons as head coach. He was 2-0 versus Johnson County.
His 2013 squad crushed the Horns 40-6 and his 2014 Highlanders came out on top 29-14.
Pittman is a proven winner and East didn’t wait until the end of the school year to make the hire.
His hiring will add to a staff that’s made the Patriots into one of the premier teams in the Mountain Lakes Conference. The Longhorns will play at East in their 2016 football opener.
Pittman resigned from the Carter County School System last Friday and began his new job Tuesday.
Jenkins makes good showing at the conference meet
Johnson County had only a couple of top finishers in the Three Rivers Conference Track meet and Dustin Jenkins was one of those.
Jenkins placed second in the discus by throwing it 124.01 feet.
The 4×400 relay team logged the other second place finish.
District Tournament Sites
The Three Rivers Conference has tabbed Sullivan County as the site of their District baseball and softball tournaments.
The baseball tournament will be played at Dobyns-Bennett High School inside of J. Fred Johnson Stadium.
Sullivan South will host the girls’ softball tournament.
Johnson County has been tabbed as one of the teams you don’t want to play in the first round of the District 1-AA Baseball Tournament. A look at some of their hitters is a reason why.
Peyton Fenner was hitting .587 going into this week and had an on-base percentage of .630. He leads the team in RBIs (27) and base hits (37).
Sam Icenhour was batting .471 with 19 stolen bases from his leadoff spot. Shane Greer was batting .482 with 17 RBIs and seven doubles.
Logan Sargent was hitting .410 and Bud Icenhour was closing in on that mark with a .384 batting average.
Nick Whitener leads the pitching staff with a 6-2 record and an ERA of 2.48. He’s also hitting at a .340 clip.
