Longhorns golf team makes regional tourney

Reece Stout shot an 89 to lead the Longhorns

ELIZABETHTON—Johnson County’s goal to reach the regional golf tournament became a reality on Monday afternoon. The Longhorns beat out Sullivan North and Happy Valley for the final berth by finishing third in the District 1 small school’s golf tournament played at the Elizabethton Golf Course.
Reece Stout was low medalist for the Longhorns with an 89. Gavin Reece and Jayden Joiner shot 109 each and Petie Pavusek had a 121 to round out their top four scores.
Johnson County finished with a score of 428.
University High edged out Hampton for the boy’s championship 353 to 354.
Mitchell Tolley shot a personal best 79 to lead the Bulldogs. Gavin Hardin had a strong round of 82 and Dru Owens finished with a 94. Izaak Hill closed out the Bulldog’s scoring with a 99.

Daxx Carr led UH with an 87. Charlie Vargo had an 88 with 89’s coming from Sean Hsu and Colin Daniels.
The Bulldogs had a chance to tie on the 18th hole but had a putt lip out.
The Longhorns will now compete in the regional that will be played in Elizabethton on Monday.
“We’re happy to make the regional and still be playing,” said Johnson County’s golf coach Eric Crabtree. “Our goal was to make the regional as a team and we did. We could have made a few more shot but the weather conditions were very favorable today. I’m proud of these guys for all the hard work they put in. We’re looking forward to playing again on Monday.”

The Longhorns didn’t have any players compete on the girls’ side.
NOTE: Ananius Bonin of Chuckey-Doak shot a 4-under 68 to win individual honors. Also qualifying for the regional was Happy Valley’s Luke Deakins, Caleb Lister of Chuckey-Doak and Jacob Cross and Justin Cross of Sullivan North.
