Longhorns can say the darnedest things

By Tim Chambers

If confidence can breed success, then Johnson County could have a banner season in 2016. The Longhorns didn’t sugarcoat things when talking about the upcoming pigskin campaign.
Kids can sometimes say the darnedest things and so can high school football players. The confidence each Longhorn teammate has in one another is off the chart.
Listed below are comments made by key players about their expectations for this season.
“I think we are definitely more balanced this year than last. I think we can be better on defense because everyone goes all out. This team plays with a ton of heart and we all play hard for one another. I would like to leave here with a playoff win and to go as hard as we can every game.” (Nevada Woodard #21)
“We have a lot of unity on this team because most of us have played together since kindergarten. I think we we’re strong on offense and defense and we’ve got a lot of athleticism on this team too. Our goal is to host a playoff game and win a conference championship. We would like to put the number 2016 and 2017 on the hill beside the 1988 one. Two playoff wins would get it done.” (Bud Icenhour #3)
“We want to go out and win every game. We are going to do whatever it takes to win because this squad is good enough to do that. Our line is committed to getting better. I believe we are going to have a special season.” (Cody Neely #50)
“I believe that our junior class is one of the best that has come through Johnson County. We don’t fear anybody. We had good teams in junior high when we all played together and we expect to do the same here. I know there is always room for improvement but I believe we’ve got a pretty good team squad now.” (Gage Hampton #20)
“The coaches have been working us hard. We’ve had to learn Coach Kerley’s system and everyone is now comfortable with what they are trying to do. We all like playing for him and everything is starting to come together. I’m expecting us to have a good season. I believe that we are going to surprise a lot of people.” (Hayden Osborne #56)
“It’s time we took football to another level. It’s time we win a first round playoff game because we’ve got the team to do that in 2016.” (Sam Allen #62)
“We went 9-0 our eighth grade year so we want to do that again. We’ve had to play Alcoa and CAK the last two years on the road because they were the one and two seeds. We want to be in that position where they have to come up here and play us. I think we can go 6-4 but our goal is to finish 9-1 or 10-0. It’s all about getting past those first three games. Nobody likes to lose. We all want to do something special this season.” (Jordan Edes-King #13)
“They might not know me now but they will when the season is over. I’m ready to play and help my team win some football games.” (Ethan Snyder #77)
“Our line has to step up and play well for us to win this season. We have to protect Nathan (Arnold) and open up holes. We have to each play like a human wrecking ball.” (Bob Stout #77)
“I think we’ve got a chance to play a lesser team that we can beat in the playoffs this season. You always want to stay away from CAK or Alcoa. We can do that with the weapons that this team has. Our defensive line is definitely better and we got a variety of speed and power at running back. We have more depth at wide receiver and two good tight ends plus the younger guys are stepping up too. We have a lot more depth now than we did last season.” (Nathan Arnold #12)
In the words of Bugs Bunny, “That’s all folks.”
