Local Karate Group goes to FLA & Brings Home GOLD!
Yama Dojo (Mountain Training Hall) is a Mountain City Karate group of the Kurokawa Organization based in Fort Myers, FLA. They went to FLA for an intense week of training and belt promotion recently which ended with them experiencing their first karate tournament.
Yama Dojo was invited to compete with the rest of their organization at the Florida Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) District Championship, East Coast Qualifier, Feb. 9, 2013. Rebekah Darocha accepted the challenge. She brought home all three gold medals in her division for kata (form), kumite (sparring) and kobudo (weapons). By doing this, she has qualified for the national competition.
I would like to thank everyone who helped me financially so I could make this trip, Rebekah shared. I credit my victory to the Lord, for with Him all things are possible.
Soke Tim Brooks and Lady Teruko Kurokawa-Brooks have been enjoying their summers in Johnson County. Last year Soke Brooks started the karate class as a ministry to the community. They are the founders of Kurokawa-Ha Shito-Ryu Karate-Do. It is a traditional Japanese karate form from her family lineage.
Karate has four major styles; Shito-Ryu being one of them. It has been practiced in America since the 50s. It is a self-defense skill, not a religion. It is being used by many for stress relief, confidence, balance, better fitness and well-being. The Kurokawa Bushido (the way of the warrior) Code of Ethical Behavior is actually the Ten Commandments. At Yama Dojo, God is the goal and karate is a skill for life and tool to testify. Prayer, Biblical values and encouraging one another in their walk with God is as important as precision, swiftness and strength.
The team is looking forward to future competitions.
At this time, classes are being held in the fellowship hall of Believers Family Worship Center, Tues. and Thurs. nights at 6 pm.
