Lady Longhorns rustle up Junior Bucs

The Lady Longhorns continued to play good basketball by pounding University School 70-36 on Monday night inside of Ray Shoun Gymnasium. Senior guard Taylor Cox was honored before the game for scoring her 1000th career points at Elizabethton High School on Friday and added 19 more to her total on Monday.

The Longhorns broke open the game in the second quarter after building a 17-10 lead after one. With Cox and Natalie Winters leading the way, they extended their advantage to 36-16 at the half. Cox sank a couple of long treys to get the ball rolling while Winters was dishing out assists at a rapid pace, (eight in the first half). They led 35-16 at the half and 57-29 going into the final stanza.

Head Coach Leon Tolley was able to substitute freely over in the second half without missing a beat. Winters scored eight points and dished out a season-high 12 assists. UH was led by center Maci Johnson’s 14 points and 12 rebound effort. The 6’2 center also blocked six shots.

The Junior Buccaneers rod Boys University School 62 – Johnson County 42

University School rode the stellar play of Tennessee baseball signee Kaleb Meredith to victory. Meredith finished the game with 36 points and six steals. He ended the night shooting 10-of-16 from the field and 11-of-13 from the free-throw line. Michael Oxentine led the Longhorns with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Horns will play at home against Sullivan East on Tuesday and Unicoi County on Friday.
