Lady Longhorns have another tough week

By Matt Hill

It was another tough week for the JCHS Softball Team, with a few bright spots mingled in.
The Lady Longhorns defeated Sullivan East 7-1, lost to Unicoi County Thursday 10-0 and went 1-3 in action at the NFS Tournament.
Twice the Lady Longhorns played Unicoi and both times saw things fall apart at the end.
On Thursday, the Lady Longhorns were tied with the Lady Devils going into the sixth before errors made everything spin around and JCHS was soon out of the game.

Saturday, the Lady Longhorns received great hitting from Ashley Arnold and had several other hits along with great fielding to give JCHS a chance, but two crucial errors led to a let down and Unicoi started hitting.
JCHS allowed eight runs in the seventh and couldn’t bounce back in the bottom of the inning

“It was a tough week, but they have figured out they can do anything they want to when they want to do it and can play perfect ball when they are ready to do that,” JCHS head coach Dana Smith said. “I challenged them after our (19-0) loss to Elizabethton yesterday and I got on them against Volunteer. We didn’t do what we needed to do against Chuckey-Doak, but to come here on Unicoi’s field and play like we did is a big boost for us. If we ever get it all together and I hope when we come around for the second round of conference games that we can produce anything we want to produce. That’s what I hope.
Against Unicoi Saturday, Smith was impressed with the way the team started after the struggles that had been taking place.
“We had some outstanding plays in the outfield and we out-hit them until the seventh inning,” Smith said. “If we can put it all together all the time, then they can be the team we thought they could be at the very beginning.”

The tough loss to take was the one against Elizabethton.
“We weren’t ready to play and I pulled the varsity out and put the JV in,” Smith said. “We had a long discussion after that,”
“I think we play better against Unicoi then we do Elizabethton, Smith said. “I don’t know why. I really don’t know why. I haven’t figured that out yet.”
On Tuesday against East, the Lady Longhorns played solid in a 7-1 win.
JCHS will play in Charleston, S.C. in a tournament this week.

HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE WEEK.
