Junior Longhorns fall in tourney

By Tim Chambers

KINGSPORT-All good things must come to an end, and that was the case with Johnson County Middle School’s basketball season on Saturday. The Longhorns had their season end in the first round of the area 1-AAA Middle School tournament played at Sullivan North High School on Saturday. They lost to North on their home court 42-40 in double overtime despite a 23-point and 18 rebound effort by Connor Simcox.

The home-standing team hit a shot with 40 seconds remaining in the second overtime that proved to be the game-winner. Dalton Pope had five points for the Horns, and Eli Dickens had six, but the Longhorns couldn’t muster enough offense to get past the home team. George Grill contributed three and Samuel Greer, one for the Horns who had a good season under the first-year head coach Mark McClain.

“I hated that we lost on Friday because I really wanted to see them advance and play in the regional,” said McClain. “Connor Simcox had a great game, and he’s played like that in several this year. I’m so proud of all of them and the way that they’ve practiced and improved. Ii can’t wait to watch all of them play at the high school level. Their all going to make good high school players because of who hard they work at it, and they want to get better.”
