JCMS Hoopsters gaining momentum

The 7th and 8th grade girls traveled to Mary Hughes last Tuesday, Nov. 29th.
The eighth grade girls lost 37-33 with Amanda Potter leading the scoring with 16 points
The seventh grade girls won 16-12 in a very scrappy battle. “Both teams hustled extremely hard,” said Coach Janet Ward-Brooks. Samantha Minks scored eight points, Michala Cretsinger had four, while Mikaela Morefield and Caitlin Leonard each had two.

The seventh grade girls defeated Hampton Thursday night, Dec. 1st, 26-17. They lead all four quarters: 10-4, 15-9, 25-14, 26-17. They outscored Hampton in the first three quarters with Hampton outscoring them in the fourth quarter. Scoring was Michala Cretsinger with 12, Samantha Mink with 10, Mikaela Morefield 2 and Jerry Wilson 2. They rebounded well and handled the pressure much better than in their home game with Hampton two weeks ago, according to Ward-Brooks.

The eighth grade boys won 45-43 over Happy Valley Monday night, Dec. 5th. Scoring was Brandon Vannoy 18, Cody Baily 12, Hunter Tester 6, Alex Tressler 5, Arron Steele 3, and Samuel Icenhour 1. JCMS led the entire first half. Happy Valley came on strong in the second half, but the Longhorns fought back hard and refused to lose. With only seconds in the game the score was tied 43-43 when Brandon Vonnoy got fouled and hit both shots to put the Horns up by 2 with 3 seconds left on the clock.

The seventh grade girls lost 25-20. Scoring was Michala Cretsinger 8, Maddie South 2, Mikaela Morefield 2, Caitlin Leonard 2 and Samantha Minks 6. “We just did not show up ready to play,” said Coach Janet Ward-Brooks. “We did not take care of the boards and we allowed them to many second and third chance shots. We waited till the fourth quarter to play and it was too late. You have to play four quarters in every game, but especially with a program as strong as Happy Valley.”
