JCMS Football Team is ready for season

By Matt Hill

The JCMS Football program has a new coach in Matt Bray and the Longhorns are already seeing improved results.
JCMS defeated Hampton 12-0 in the Little Watauga Jamboree on Friday night and the Longhorns are looking forward to the season.
JCMS has two scrimmages scheduled this week before officially kicking it off Sept. 2 at Cloudland.
The Longhorns also have bigger numbers this year and are looking good heading into the new campaign.
“I think the kids are excited about how we’ve changed the program,” Bray said, who has also been an assistant at the high school and the high school track coach. I believe they understand that it’s in their best interests to do what the high school does, so that we have one continuous program all the way through. We had 51 total at last count, so that’s really good and I’m excited about having so many kids out for football. Having depth is really important and when you’re in middle school that’s even better. I’m pretty pleased with how things are turning out.
The Longhorns have a mixture of experienced eighth graders along with newer eighth graders. He hopes the new ones can pick it up quick.
“Hopefully some those newer eighth graders by the middle of the season can play some more and help us out,” Bray said.
The Jamboree saw the Longhorns score two touchdowns and control the game. Bray liked what he saw out of his team.
“The varsity did well,” Bray said. “We had some miscues and a couple of little mistakes that we can fix. We ran good and threw the ball OK. We’re just trying to get the kinks out of the system and get the boys on the same page and hopefully we’ll get it done before the first game.
The Longhorns seem to be improving every day and Bray is seeing that in his team as well.
