ELIZABETHTON—Johnson County’s dominance over Unicoi County ended on Saturday in the first round of the District 1-AA tournament. The Longhorns fell into the loser’s bracket after losing 7-2 at Milligan College on Anglin Field.
Errors killed the Longhorns as nearly every run scored by the Blue Devils were unearned.
A sure double play ball that would have ended the inning resulted in a two-base error that allowed the Devils to take a 2-0 lead in the second inning.
The Blue Devils got a strong pitching performance from sophomore Jordan Bridges who came within one pitch of throwing a complete game.
Bridges was supported with a 4-0 lead after three innings of play, and only two of those runs were earned.
The Longhorns played without freshman standout Asa Lewis who was lost for the season with a possible torn ACL this past week. Lewis was hitting over .500 and had been a massive part of the Longhorns’ offense.
The Blue Devils got a pair
of RBI singles from LJ
Mitchell and Brett Strother in the third that ended the day for Longhorns’ starting pitcher Jayden Joiner.
Bradley Livorsi’s single drove in Weston Throop for Johnson County’s first run of the game after Throop had reached on a base hit. Livorsi also had a triple in the game but was left stranded in the second inning.
Livorsi ended the day going 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored. Joiner and Icenhour also collected two hits apiece. Ben Howard had the only other one.
Freshman Zack Parsons pitched well in relief for the
Longhorns He struck out three
batters in 2 2/3 innings and
allowed only one run. He also got the Horns out of jam upon entering the game.
The Longhorns will now move to TVA Credit Union Ballpark what was once known as Cardinal
Park in Johnson City on Legion Street.
They play Happy Valley at 5 p.m. on Monday and will face Unicoi County at 7:30 on Monday should they win.
