There is not much thought given to high school basketball by fans in June but its been a busy month for boys head coach Austin Atwood. His Horns recently took part in a camp at Belmont University last Sunday, then stopped off in Knoxville on the way back to compete at Maryville Heritage.
The boys played 12 games in Nashville and six more in Knoxville. Jose Guzman and Nathan Arnold were able to make the Nashville trip but couldnt take part in Knoxville due to prior commitments.
The team went 5-7 at Belmont including a huge win over AAA powerhouse Hunter Lane. They closed out the trip by going 4-2 in Knoxville.
We took 12 kids down and played pretty well, said Atwood. We got to play against some different caliber of competition and a lot of it was good. There were six state tournament teams at the Belmont camp and the teams at Maryville Heritage were very good. It was a great measuring stick for us especially at Belmont because we had everyone there. Were pretty athletic, but were not as deep as I would like to be. But thats why were here. We have a whole lot of things that weve got to work on in order to get better. These kids are hard workers. I feel like theyll get there.
Atwood singled out Bud Icenhour and Cody Bailie for their outstanding play.
