ERWIN — Johnson County overcame a 14-9 first quarter deficit to knock off Unicoi County 44-32 in Erwin on Monday.
Iain Tester led a second charge by scoring six points that allowed the Longhorns to take a 24-23 halftime advantage. Zack Eller and Gavin Reece had a basket each late in the quarter that appeared to swing the momentum toward Johnson County.
Blake Atwood scored five quick third-quarter points that stretched their lead. Troy Arnold’s bucket in the paint gave them a 32-27 lead heading into the final frame.
Eller and Tester spoiled any thoughts of a Blue Devils comeback in the final frame. The pair combined to score 10 points. Reece delivered the dagger with a long three to seal the win.
Eller tied for game high honors with 13. Tester added 10 points and Atwood tallied eight. Arnold finished with six points and Reece had five.
“We didn’t play well at all tonight,” said Johnson County’s head coach Trent Snyder. “This definitely wasn’t one of our better games.”
Odell scored 13 points for the Blue Devils. Edwards and Casey added nine and eight points respectively.
