Verna Mae Hammons, 83, Watauga passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at her residence following an extended illness. A longtime resident of Carter County, she was a daughter of the late Lillard T. and Ollie Edith Curd Hammons. She was a 1949 graduate of Elizabethton High School. Verna was a retired Telephone Operator with the United Inter Mountain Telephone Company. She was a member of the New Hope Church of Christ. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Survivors include a sister: Dorothy H. Mullins, Hermitage, Tenn.; several nieces, nephews and great and great-great nieces and nephews; and her care giver and friend, Deb Taylor.
Funeral services were conducted at 7 p.m. Thursday in Memorial Funeral Chapel with Mr. Paul Peer, Minister officiating. Graveside service and interment were at 1 p.m. Friday, May 24, 2013 in Monte Vista Memorial Park. Pallbearers were selected from family and friends. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the New Hope Church of Christ Memorial Fund. The family received friends from 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the funeral home.
