Laura Evelyn Miller, 75, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2013 at Johnston Memorial Hospital.
Evelyn was born on September 4, 1937 to the late James A. & Mary Gentry of Shady Valley, TN.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Miller of Shady Valley, TN. Her brother, James Jackson Gentry of Glen Burnie, MD.
Evelyn is survived by her dear friend, Bill Townsend of Boone, NC. Sons, David Wright and his wife Susan of Shady Valley, TN and Randall Wright of Pensacola, FL. A very special sister-in-law, Louise Gentry of Glen Burnie, MD. Three grandsons, nieces and a nephew and her little dog and constant companion, Peaches.
She retired from Unisys Corp. in 1987 after 30 years of service. Evelyn then kept busy by traveling, gardening, enjoying her passion of hummingbirds, playing the piano and organ for church services, and doing pet therapy for residents at a nursing home in Abingdon, Va. She also loved to cook for family, friends, and for the sick.
She also worked for Virginia Continuing Legal Education doing seminars at the Southwest Virginia Higher Education Center in Abingdon, Virginia. She retired from VA CLE in 2012 after 21 years of service.
Evelyn lived her life to the fullest. Everyone will remember her as a person young at heart, independent, with a very magnetic personality who never met a stranger. She also had a very loving and giving nature. In keeping with that trait, she has chosen to donate her body to the Quillen College of Medicine in hope of helping others.
Private memorial services are being held at her special request. There will be no viewing or visitation at this time. Funeral and memory services have already been held by those who were her friends over the years as she has lived and walked on earth.
Instead of flowers, the family request that an act of kindness be given to someone in need in honor and memory of Evelyn’s giving nature.
The family would like to thank everyone who has shown support to Evelyn during her illness. And a special thanks to Bill Townsend for his loving care.
