Joyce Potter Odom, 68, 251 Cobb Creek Road, Butler, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2012 in the Johnson County Community Hospital, following an extended illness. She was born in Carter County and was the daughter of the late Murphy and Delia Borders Potter. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Leon Warren Odom, Sr. and a sister, Mary Odom. Mrs. Odom was a member of Elk Mills Christian Church.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Leon and Marsha Odom, Butler; a daughter, Tammy Hartley, Butler; three grandchildren, Nate Shepherd, Mike Wayne Hartley and his wife, Stephanie, Delia Ann Hartley; three sisters, Ruby Matheson, Roan Mountain, Kathy Hamby, Buck Mountain, Wilma Chaplin, Roan Mountain; three brothers, Henry Potter, Oliver “Gourd” Potter, and Ronald Lee Potter, all of Buck Mountain. Several nieces and nephews also survive.
The funeral service for Mrs. Odom was conducted on Wednesday, April 4, 2012 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel of Peace, Tetrick Funeral Home, Elizabethton with Rev. Jim Storie officiating. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel from 5:00 – 7:00 PM on Wednesday prior to the service and at the home of her son, Leon Odom at other times.
The graveside service and interment were conducted on Thursday, April 5, 2012 at 2:00 PM in the Markland Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Dave Smith, Joe Shepherd, Jr., Angelo Giarrusso, Scotty “P.A.” Halverson, James Kegley, and Chris Turner. Honorary pallbearers were the Butler Fire Department and First Responders, and the staff of Northeast Correctional Complex.
