Doris Ileen Howard, 91, of Ashland, Ohio, passed away Monday, November 24, 2014 at Crystal Care Nursing Home in Ashland. She was born April 28, 1923, in Mountain City, Tennessee, and was the daughter of Lawton and Nellie (Gentry) Harper.
 Doris was Protestant by faith and a member of the Silver Lake Church in Tennessee.
 Her life›s work was making a loving and comfortable home for her family. Doris was always a gracious hostess and excellent cook. Rarely did Doris find it necessary to raise her voice to make her views heard. Doris placed a high value on the education of her three daughters and facilitated each of them completing college. Doris spent eighteen years as a military spouse following her husband and life mate from Air Force Base to Air Force Base. Doris›s husband considered Doris his best friend.
 Survivors include her husband of 68 3/4 years, Edward W. Howard; children, Janice L. (Norm) Gurnsey, Carolyn E. Bowles, and Linda S. Howard; grandchildren, Margaret A. Reffner (James Kumpf), David P. Bowles (Stephanie Turner), and Brent S. Gurnsey (Angeline Allen); great grandchildren, Nathan T. Reffner, Ryan S. Reffner, Sarah M. Turner, and Daniel P. Bowles; sister, Marie Rinehart; sister-in-law, Pauline Miller; two nieces; and seven nephews.
 Doris was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Louise McFadden; brothers, James Harper and Lawton Harper, Jr.; sister-in-law, Gladys Roberts; nephews, Kenny Harper and Mack Roberts; and sons-in-law, David Bowles and William Wilson.
 Private funeral services will be held Saturday, November 29, 2014 at the Ashland Home of Wappner Funeral Directors, 308 Claremont Avenue, Ashland. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery in Lodi, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of North Central Ohio, 1050 Dauch Drive, Ashland, Ohio 44805.
