Cora Bernice Payne, age 90, of 851 D. Payne Road, Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, July 10, 2015 at her home. She was born on July 3, 1925 in Johnson County, TN to the late Andy W. and Lora Callie Simcox Hammons. In addition to her parents, Bernice was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Payne, who passed away on August 31, 2013, and by an infant brother, Dexter Hammons.
She worked as a cook at various places including Burlington Industries, Johnson County Hospital, Boone Trail Dairy Bar, Mountain City Bus Station and others for many years. She enjoyed reading the Bible, quilting, gardening and canning, and making apple butter. She was known for her biscuits and rolls. Most of all, she loved her family.
Bernice attended Hammons Chapel Christian Church for many years and later became a member of Appalachian Church of Christ.
She is survived by her children: JoAnn Atwood and husband Blake, Betty Vaught and husband Ray, Bill Payne and wife Francis, Jerry Payne and Tom Payne; brothers: Elmer Hammons, Paul Hammons and wife Thelma; sister, Viola Joines; grandchildren: Tanya Huyard, April Shelton, Michelle Michael, Shannon Payne, Sandra Herron and Brian Vaught; step-grandchildren: Rebecca Simcox, Jamie Pennington, great grandchildren: Shea Huyard, Ashtyn Henson, Kal’el Michaels, Kevin Shelton, Jacob Vaught and Gunner Herron; step great-grandchildren, Savannah Simcox, Shiloh Simcox, Dawson Pennington, Bella Pennington; special friends, Pearl Jones, Faye Hall, Wanda Payne, several nieces and nephews and many friends and neighbors.
The graveside service and interment were conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday July 12, 2015 at the Dunn Memorial Cemetery with Joshua Giddings and Buddy Morefield officiating. Pallbearers were Eric Huyard, Shannon Payne, Larry Henson, Kevin Shelton, Brian Vaught, Douglas Hammons, Jacob Vaught, and James Shelton. Honorary pallbearers were Carroll Taylor, Richard Wandrie, Phil Correll, Richard Wittenberg, Richie Wittenberg, Ralph Vanover, and Jim Thagard. Friends were invited to visit with the family after the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to either Appalachian Church of Christ, 144 Calvary Lane, Mountain City, TN 37683, or to Hammons Chapel Christian Church, 171 Hubert Taylor Rd., Mountain City, TN 37683 in care of Dorothy Shupe.
