Colonel Jack A. Thomas, USAF, Retired, passed away on January 14, 2016. His wife, Sharon, was at his side. Born in Laurel Bloomery, TN on August 8, 1940, he was the son of Fred and Pearl (Maxwell) Thomas. After graduation from Emory and Henry College, Jack was commissioned inthe US Air Force as a Lieutenant. It was the perfect decision for Jack for the next 24 years and 2 months of his life. Jack excelled as a Weapons System Officer with the 497th TAC Squadron (OWL FAC and WOLF FAC). He was proud to serve 1-1/2 combat tours in the F-4 in the skies over Vietnam. Jack’s awards and decorations are numerous. His combat medals include the Distinguished Flying Cross with three Oakleaf Clusters, Meritorious Service Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters and the Air Medal with Twenty-seven Oak Leaf Clusters. Jack went on to serve the Air Force until his permanent retirement in 1991. During his retirement, Jack enjoyed golfing, camping and visiting his grandchildren. Colonel Thomas is survived by his wife, Major Sharon Thomas, USAF, Retired, who will miss him every day; son Andy Thomas (Kathleen),daughter Annette Thomas Stopar (Craig); and grandchildren Sarah, Michael, Bryan and Kyle, whom Jack dearly loved. He is preceded in death by his sister Evelyn Thomas. lnterment will be at Arlington National Cemetery with full honors at a later date.
