Weight loss competitors vie for prize at local gym

Twenty-nine people entered Mountain Fitness this past Monday with trepidation as they prepared to face the ominous scale and begin their weight loss journey. Brooke Reece, a certified personal trainer of Reece Fitness, and Karyn Downey, owner of Mountain Fitness, have joined forces as Johnson County’s first official weight loss contest has begun.
The first meeting for “BL2,” as the competition is called, contestants laid the ground rules for the 16-week weight loss program. Approximately 23 women and six men listened to every word as Reece and Downey discussed the program, the work-outs and the sometimes dreaded weigh-ins. Each contestant has paid $20 to go into the winning pot for the biggest loser, the person who loses the largest percentage of body weight. The stakes are high as the winner will take away $580. The program is based on the popular “Biggest Loser” television show that follows contestants on their weight loss journey at an exclusive weight-loss center. Unlike the “Biggest Loser” show, there will be no competitions and eliminations. Every four weeks, the contestant who has lost the biggest percentage of weight will win an hour of training with Reece, one-month membership at Mountain Fitness, along with a Mountain Fitness t-shirt. The first private weigh-in was conducted Monday evening, with measurements taken for those who wanted to participate.
