Roan Creek Elementary School located at 2410 Roan Creek Rd, Mountain City, TN is ready to host the annual chili cook-off event now set for Friday, March 1 at 6 p.m.
According event organizers during the contest, students in Johnson County will be competing for title of 2019 Chili Champions.
More than 200 people attended last year’s event, sampling a variety of chili prepared by the students. Event organizers are looking forward to once again welcome area residents to enjoy a wide variety offered this year.
“Students can compete in three different categories – spiciest, home-style and most unique,” said Sarah Ransom with the UT/TSU Extension office.
“Guests who come to the event get to do many great things,” she added with admission at $3 per person, which includes a bowl, spoon, drink and a ballot.
The contest will run, as it is tradition, with each guest to sample and eat as much chili as they would like and then vote for their favorite.
For those who cannot stay for the whole time, take out bowls are available.
“The competing students all work hard to make a tasty chili and no one goes home hungry,” Ransom said.
The event includes a cake and dessert auction around 7 p.m.
Ransom emphasized that the cake and dessert auction portion of the event goes to raising money to help support the Johnson County 4-H program in the following year.
The annual 4-H Chili Cook-Off provides many opportunities for students to build life skills, get involved with the community and help support the 4-H program.
“Funds from this event go to cover scholarships, baking and cooking classes, afterschool programs and STEM project groups,” she said. “We hope you come ready to eat and ready to bid on some delicious sweet treats.
