Single car crash claims the life of a Shady Valley man

A missing person’s report ended badly last week as the body of Joshua A. Cornett, 23, of Shady Valley was found Tuesday night in his 1999 Dodge pickup truck at the bottom of steep ravine near the Johnson County/Carter County line near Cross Mountain, a stretch of road notorious for dangerous curves and embankments.
Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece indicates his department had taken a missing person report from the victim’s mother on Tuesday, who indicated Cornett had not been seen since Saturday. “They had begun looking for him and they thought they should check around Cross Mountain,” said Reece. “They had begun walking up and down the road when they found where the truck went off.” The Carter County Sheriff’s Department also joined in the search and Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes estimates the depth of the embankment where the vehicle was discovered somewhere between 100 and 150 feet. “The embankment which the vehicle went down is very steep and the ground was soft from rains earlier in the week,” the sheriff said.
Sgt. Carry Hixon of the Tennessee Highway Patrol reports that Cornett was traveling north on Highway 91 at a high rate of speed. According to Hixon, the vehicle obviously began to slide causing it to crash off the left side of the roadway.
Tennessee Highway Patrol is continuing the investigation into the crash.
