School Board holds final meeting of school year

By Lacy HIlliard
The Johnson County School Board met in regular session on Thursday, May 14. The board continues to meet throughout the summer, however, the May meeting was the last meeting during the 2014/2015 school year.
The meeting began by honoring the employee of the month as well a presentation of exceptional students from Shady Valley Elementary. The Employee of the Month for May is Karen Blevins, however, she couldn’t attend the meeting so the Employee of the Month for June was honored in her stead. David Wilson was named June Employee of the Month for his tireless service and according to Dr. Mischelle Simcox “his positive attitude.” Dr. Simcox went on to say that Wilson “always has a smile on his face,” which earned him the nickname “Smiley.” Richard Price, Principal of Shady Valley Elementary, was in attendance with high praises about his students. Danielle McKnight, Rebecca McKnight, Jason Hartman, Harley Hartman and Carol Leonard were all recognized for their hard work in achieving academic excellence – many under adverse circumstances.
Following the recognition of outstanding employees and students, the board moved to approve the consent agenda, which contained items such as budget resolutions, Coordinated School Health funding and various field trip requests.
Student School Board Representative Abigail Reece was next to give her report to the board. Reece spoke about the success of the Johnson County High School prom, which was held at the Meadowview Convention Center in Kingsport. “Many of us danced the night away from songs ranging from Small Town Girl to Rocky Top and everything in between,” said Reece. She went on to tout the successes of the Mitchell Stockinger, who made it to the second round of tournament competitions in both tennis and track. Reece concluded by thanking the board members for allowing her to serve as student representative. William Sutherland will take Reece’s place as student representative for the 2015/2016 school year.
