New rules for parade participants

Mountain City’s Town Council decided to implement safety changes in the Fourth of July parade based on the recent accident at Trail Days in nearby Damascus, Virginia where a car plowed into a group of hikers and visitors to the area on Laurel Avenue. It was estimated 60 people were injured in varying degrees. Reports indicate the driver of the car suffered a medical emergency. Mountain City’s Town Council passed a safety regulation where every vehicle driven in the parade must have at least two licensed occupants. Further requirements state there must be an attendant walking on each side of the float to ensure both adults and children remain a safe distance away from the vehicle.
