Marvin Bunting shot and killed after firing at sheriff’s deputies

Officers with the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department responded to 149 J Bunton Road in Mountain City last Thursday, December 9, 2010 in reference to a domestic disturbance. According to a press release from the sheriff’s department, upon arrival officers Chris Brown, Matt Cress and Cole Hieronymus made contact with Marvin Bunting who opened fire on them. The officers returned fire, killing the man.

Bunting was pronounced dead at the scene and the body was transported to the Quillen College of Medicine in Johnson City for autopsy.

No officers or other persons at the residence were injured in the incident. According to standard procedure, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was called to the scene to investigate the shooting and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave until the investigation is complete.

According to Sheriff Mike Reece in a telephone interview on Monday, TBI continues its investigation, but no more details are available at this time.
