Long-time merchant, John Stout, dies at 82

Richard “John” Stout, age 82, of Mountain City, died Saturday morning, March 20, 2010 at the Johnson County Community Hospital.
Stout owned and ran City Shoe Store in Mountain City until his retirement almost three years ago. John’s father, Grady Stout, opened the business in 1927. Father and son worked together in the store for many years, with John continuing after his father’s death. After 58 years in business, John Stout retired and City Shoe Store closed its doors in 2007. At that time it was the oldest remaining retail business in Johnson County and won the Chamber of Commerce Small Business of the Year award in June of that year.
Stout was known by all as a kind-hearted individual that cared about his fellowman and his community. His contribution of shoes to many Johnson County sports teams over the years was a small sample of his generous spirit.
Stout is survived by his wife, Betty Vaught Stout. He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Suzanne. A complete obituary is on page B-4 of today’s Tomahawk.
