Lassiter files lawsuit against sheriff, county mayor, drug task force

A lawsuit was recently filed in Greenville Federal Court against Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece, Johnson County Mayor Larry Potter and the First Judicial Task Force. Local attorney Perry Stout filed the suit on behalf of Tammy Lassiter, who claims the defendants violated her civil rights in connection the actions of an agent with the First Judicial Drug Task Force and Johnson County deputy when Lassiter was arrested on drug charges.
Lassiter is seeking more than a million dollars in the lawsuit.
In October, 2010, Tammy Lassiter was charged with child abuse and neglect or endangerment after officers discovered the home she shared with Johnson County Constable Benny J. Cornell was hazardous to a child living there. Tammy Lassiter was charged with three counts of counterfeit sales, as well as charges of child abuse and endangerment. On May 19, 2011, all of these charges against Lassiter were dropped. According to Assistant District Attorney Kent Garland, the department is earnestly investigating information received from witnesses with regard to Lassiter's arrest and charges. In October Judge Robert Cupp denied a request by the district attorney's office to drop the charges to avoid being sued by Lassiter.
A hearing is being held on January 6th to set a trial date.
