Johnson County education icon, Emily Millsaps, to be laid to rest Thursday morning

Mrs. MillsapsMrs. Emily G. Millsaps, age 89, of Mountain City, Tennessee passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016.
Mrs. Millsaps was a true educator and community-minded citizen in every sense of the words.
Mrs. Millsaps began her career in 1947 in Johnson County teaching third and fourth grades at Butler School. With the exception of the following school year when she taught in Carter County, she was involved in the Johnson County School system until her retirement in 1999.
In 1967 she helped start a pilot Kindergarten program in Johnson County where she served as the Parent-Teacher Coordinator. The program became a model and was visited by many educators from other parts of Tennessee.
Her name became synonymous with education in Johnson County during her 50-plus years as teacher, principal and mentor.
Following her retirement from the school system, Mrs. Millsaps began an early education program at First Baptist Church where she served as director and teacher for ten years.
In addition to serving on countless boards and civic organizations throughout the years, in 1982 she was elected as the first female commissioner in Johnson County. She retained that position for 30 years.
Mrs. Millsaps’ family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at the First Baptist Church.  Eastern Star service will follow at 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 3, 2016 at the First Baptist Church in Mountain City.
