Hunting trip proves fatal for local man

On Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 1:47 p.m., TWRA dispatchers received a report from Carter County 911 indicating a Johnson County man had suffered a gunshot wound to the head in what appeared to be a hunting-related incident.
According to Carter County Sheriff Chris Mathes, the victim, Ricky E. Arnold, 45, was apparently hunting alone near Watauga Lake along Little Stoney Creek Road. A passerby discovered Arnold with a gunshot wound to the head and alerted authorities. According to authorities, a rifle “with a broken trigger guard” was discovered at the scene.
Arnold was air-lifted from the scene to the Johnson City Medical Center and was pronounced dead around 5:30 p.m.
The Carter County Sheriff’s Department is continuing to investigate and an autopsy was ordered.
