Delinquent property tax sale in county next month

By Paula Walter
The Chancery Court of Johnson County will hold a delinquent property tax sale on Monday, February 23, 2015, beginning at 10:00 am in the upper courtroom of the Johnson County courthouse. Sherrie Fenner, Clerk and Master for Johnson County, will be the auctioneer for the sale that includes parcels with unpaid taxes up to 2012. Owners have until 9:30 that morning to pay back taxes and be removed from the sale.
Registration begins at 9:00 am, and any interested parties must register and receive a number in order to bid on the properties. You must be present to bid. Each parcel is sold as is with no warranty. The opening bids include the amount of personal property taxes due, including interest, penalties, along with court costs and lawyer fees. There are houses on some of the parcels. It is up to interested buyers to review the properties in advance of the sale.
The properties will be sold to the highest bidder; however, there is a one-year redemption period where the owners can pay their back taxes plus 10 percent. A form must be filled out and approved by the chancellor before the owner can claim their property. If no payment has been made by the owners by the end of the year, buyers would be given the necessary legal paperwork to record the deed. At that time, the property becomes theirs. If a parcel is not sold, the county takes possession.
