Barton Hawkins dies at 88

Barton Allen Hawkins, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the Johnson City Medical Center.
As a part of Hawkins’ distinguished career, he was a member of the 94th and 95th Tennessee General Assemblies and a delegate to the 1970 Tennessee Constitution Convention representing the 4th Legislative District. He served four years as a member of the Private Industry Council of Tennessee and Tennessee State Representative from 1985 – 1988.
Hawkins was a 1944 graduate of Johnson County High School. Following high school, Barton enlisted in the United States Army, where he honorably served during World War II. Following his military career, Barton returned to farming. He was a graduate of the Graham School Cattlemen in Garrett, Kansas; served 12 years as Southeast Division Director of Dairymen, Inc.; served 14 years as Director of American Dairy Association of Tennessee; served 14 years as Director of Food and Nutrition Council of the Appalachian; Former President of the Tennessee Milk Producers Federation; served four years as the Director of the National Dairy Council; Delegate to the National Milk Producers Federation. Barton served 16 years as Director of Soil and Water Conservation of Johnson County.
