Allen charged with first degree murder of Moffett

A joint investigation between the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has led to the arrest of Michael Craig Allen, 41. He has been charged with first degree murder in the shooting death of Sandra Lee Moffett.
On Thursday, April 22, 2010 at approximately 11:50 p.m. officers of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department responded to 943 Hwy 421 N in reference to a report of a subject down. Upon arrival officers found Sandra Lee Moffett, 57, 1781 Sluder Road, Shady Valley, Tennessee, lying in the garage of the residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. A .22 caliber pistol was found nearby. She was taken to the Johnson County Health Center where she was pronounced dead.
Allen, 131 Pardue Lane, Mountain City, was also found lying on the floor with a laceration to the head. He was air lifted to an area hospital. He was treated for his injuries and later released from the hospital. According to Sheriff Mike Reece, Allen said he does not remember how he was injured.
Reece said the two had been romantically involved for several months and had attended a birthday party at a bar across the street from the residence prior to the shooting. According to the sheriff, both had been drinking. Investigators believe there was an altercation between Allen and Moffett, that he grabbed the gun and it went off.
According to Sheriff Reece, Allen has given a confession.

Moffett was a guard at Northeast Correctional Complex at the time of her death. She had previously worked as a corrections officer for the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.
Allen remains in the Johnson County Jail on a $1 million bond. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 9.
