Presidential candidates of both parties would do well to take a deep breath and reflect on the Statue of Liberty. It is our national icon of liberty, the portal through which 12 million immigrants entered our country from 1892 through 1954 and whose image is embossed and printed on our currency.
These candidates need to remember that their ancestors were immigrants and went on to settle their ancestral lands, populate the workforce of private and public corporations and government agencies, and were hugely responsible for making America a prosperous country for all social classes.
The current diatribes against immigration have grown vile and hateful. History is one of our greatest teachers and one could easily see similarities between todays environment and what existed in pre-war Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy.
The need to agree that all men are created equal and have certain unalienable rights, among them life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness has never been greater.
