Blakenbeckler says we should put aside our differences

In the wake of the recent tragic mass shooting at a nightclub in Orlando, FL this month, the country has joined together, saying an attack on any American is an attack on America. One of the most iconic displays of solidarity and patriotism is our stars and stripes, our nation’s flag.
President Barrack Obama signed a proclamation on June 12 instructing the flag be flown at half mast until sunset on June 16. I was proud, as I drove into town to see the courthouse flag at half mast, along with the National Guard Armory. What I was not proud to see however, that these were the only flags that had been flown as requested by our commander and chief.
From his official proclamation: “ I hereby order that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds”. To see how many places completely ignored this makes me feel truly sad.
As Americans, we must put aside our differences and remember that regardless of our opinions, we are all Americans. I am PROUD to be an American, and I feel that as a community we can do better to show our pride in our country and our respect for those who lost their lives. Please, if you fly the flag, and it is requested that we lower it to honor lives lost, or any other reason,do your patriotic duty as a flag owner. Let’s all join together the next time this is requested and as a community show how proud we are, as Mountain City, to be Americans!

God Bless!
