The Johnson County Board of Education met on Thursday, December 8 for its regularly scheduled meeting; all board members were present. The meeting began with recognizing the employee and students of the month, who were chosen from Roan Creek Elementary.
Norma Sutherland was chosen as the employee of the month. Sutherland, who is known by students and staff as “Ms. Sunny,” always “jumps in to help us without taking pause,” said Principal Dr. Cheri Long. Sutherland also helps with Girls on Go and is “always encouraging” students with her “kind spirit…bright attitude and shining smile.”
Seven students were then honored from grades kindergarten through sixth; these students were chosen based on their outstanding character. They are Lindsey Yates, kindergarten; Nadia Castro Gomez, first grade; Roma Lipford, second grade; Emma Lipham, third grade; Sarah Morris, fourth grade; Sophia Livorsi, fifth grade; Katelynn Eskridge, sixth grade. Each of the students gave school board members a t-shirt from Roan Creek Elementary as a thank you.
Next, representatives from the Sutherland Community Church addressed the board to ask if they would relinquish a piece of property that is next to the church, in order for the church to begin using it. Board Chairman, Kevin Long said that the “attorneys are looking into it and will have more information about it in January.”
