The Laurel VFD currently has 19 members who answer an average of 107 calls per year. The department’s individual members each undergo approximately 24 hours of yearly training to provide a variety of services. “We provide medical assistance, basic rescue, and fire prevention programs,” Colson explained.

The Laurel VFD member’s ties to their community drive each one to answer the call when an emergency happens as Colson stated, “Our department has a sense of pride and dedication to service.”

Serving the historic community of Laurel Bloomery, the Laurel Volunteer Fire Department has been a landmark and gathering place for over 50 years. “We were established in 1968 and Raymond Wills was the first Fire Chief,” shared Laurel VFD Chief Kevin Colson. “We were the first fire department organized in the county. The city was first fire department of course, but we were the first county department.”
