Historical Society has the Christmas gift

It seems that Christmas is a time of the year when folks go out of their way to be kind and helpful. I have been the recipient of some of that kindness and helpfulness this year, and I am indeed thankful for it. Wouldn’t it be great if that would be the case all year? “Merry Christmas” and “Happy Holidays” ring out from shoppers in the stores and on the streets and in the get-togethers that people have during the Christmas Season.
Of course, from my perspective, sometimes I feel that there is too much hype and commercialism that time of the year. “Jesus is the reason for the season” is a slogan that has been used quite often during Christmas time. I think that slogan says it well. Jesus is certainly the reason for the season. My hope is that this will be the case in our thoughts and prayers as we balance tradition and the spiritual part of that special most Holy time.
Gift giving is customary during the Christmas Season. May I recommend a place you can get great gifts: The Johnson County Welcome Center. In the Center, the Johnson County Historical Society has a variety of books to sell. The three red-backed coffee-table size books of family histories make wonderful gifts.
The Society printed its first book in 1986. Another was published in 2000, and the last one was printed in 2015. Individually or as a set, those books would be a valuable legacy to pass down from generation to generation. Each one includes a great many pictures and family histories. The county seal is embossed on the cover. It is valuable for those folks who are interested in genealogy.
The society also published a smaller paperback book entitled Pictorial History of Johnson County. It is indeed a treasure of information. Don’t forget. Historical Society cookbooks are also available. There is an interesting museum located inside the Welcome Center building.
Each year the Center is beautifully decorated for the season. If you haven’t visited the Welcome Center, this time of year will be a great time to do so. Welcome Center Director Kelly Turner will be glad to help you in your quest for a gift.
