According to the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, 4700 Tennessee youth under the age of 18 become new daily smokers each year. Local public health advocates are set on breaking the cycle, starting with Johnson County’s young people.
#UNSMOKEABLE is a movement led by the Johnson County Health Department in an effort to encourage and inspire Johnson County youth to live a tobacco-free life. #UNSMOKEABLE is defined as not smoking due to a commitment of living a strong and healthy life, meaning that one knows the consequences of smoking and chooses to refrain. This campaign is funded by the Tennessee Department of Health and the Tennessee Tobacco Settlement Program.
“Unsmokeable is the belief that using tobacco is undesirable. It’s a refusal to let any addiction or pressures control one’s life,” said Angie Stout, Public Health Educator at the Johnson County Health Department.
To kick off the movement, Unsmokeable water bottles were provided to every 6th- 8th grade student in Johnson County. Students were given information about the campaign to guide them to online educational resources, campaign social media channels, contests, and upcoming events. Instead of solely focusing on the negatives of smoking, the program works to inspire kids to imagine what they could be when they are #Unsmokeable.
With the #UNSMOKEABLE movement gaining support throughout Johnson County, numerous organizations, are jumping on board.  Those include Coordinated School Health, A.C.T.I.O.N. Coalition and Mountain City/Johnson County Community Center.
#UNSMOKEABLE will be in full motion during the next few months with live events and online activity.
