ROBERT W. LEFTWICH -

Retired Master Chief ROBERT W. LEFTWICH, age 87, United States Navy, passed away Monday, June 18, 2012 in Gulf Port Mississippi. He served in the Navy from January 1943 until August 1972 in a number of ships, overseas and stateside naval facilities. He served during World War II, Korea, Vietnam and Bay of Pigs. Most significant, CUB 16 Okinawa, 1945: Bay of Pigs. He was Command Master in Chief, Iceland, Australia and USS Concord prior to retirement. After leaving the Navy he served in various management positions with Central Telephone and Utilities Corp. for ten years before retiring in 1982 to Mountain City, TN. where he and his wife resided until 1999. He was a mason and a member of Lexington Lodge No. 1, Lexington, KY, a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Mason, Panama City, FL.; A Shiner, Sesostris Temple and Eastern Star, Lincoln, Nebraska. He was also a member of Rotary International, Past President of the Rotary Club of Mountain City, TN, and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of the LEFTWICH HERITAGE FOUNDATION incorporated in the state of Virginia.

He was born in 1924 the second of three boys of Claude Mitchell Leftwich and Virginia Ellett Leftwich of Bedford County, VA. He has two brothers, Clause E. Leftwich of Virginia Beach, VA., and Samuel E. Leftwich of Greensboro, NC. He was married to Helen Eileen Harold of Lincoln, Kansas in 1952 and they had four children, Cheryl Lee Anderson and Steven Randall Leftwich of Independence, MO., Gwynne Claudia Leftwich of Greenwood, AR., and Shelia Anne Alderson who passed away in 2011. His children and a number of grandchildren survive him, two grandchildren passed away before their tenth birthday and his wife, Helen, of 48 years passed away in 2000. His interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery beside his wife Helen.
