HOBERT “LURCH” THOMAS -
Hobert “Lurch” Thomas of Bristol, VA, age 73, went to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 2, 2012, at Wellmont Hospice House. He was born on December 9, 1938 to the late Bill and Mary Thomas. He lived most of his life in the Bristol area and served his country as a member of the US Army. He was preceded in death by brothers, Garland Thomas, Benjamin “Speed” Thomas, Harold “Hop” Thomas, and Clarence “Burr” Thomas. He was also preceded in death by sisters, Gladys Testerman and Evelyn Moore.
His only surviving sibling is Dora Brewster of Wilmington, Delaware.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Mary McClureThomas, three daughters, Vickie Chafin and husband Rusty, Patty Sweet and husband Tim, Marie Crusenberry and husband Todd all of Bristol, Va. He is also survived by grandchildren Wayne Robinson, Victoria Tolbert and husband Hunter, Clint & Katie Chafin, Samantha & Noah Crusenberry, Danny Sweet and one great-grandchild, Houston Tolbert as well as several nieces and nephews. Hobert was a faithful member of Community Baptist Church and was known as Papaw by all there. Hobert worked at Valleydale for over 20 years as well as Fingerhut and Bristol Compressors until his retirement in 1998.
The family would like to thank Wellmont Hospice for the wonderful care they received during Hobert’s illness. The family received friends from 4:00 – 6:00 pm on Saturday or at or any time at the home of his daughter, Marie Crusenberry, 539 Meadowcrest Drive, Bristol, VA.
The service was held at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2012, in the Weaver Funeral Home Chapel. Officiating was Pastor Todd Crusenberry. The honorary pallbearers were the men of Community Baptist Church. Committal Services were held Sunday, May 6, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens in Abingdon, Virginia with Military honors conducted by VFW Honor Guard.
