Jim Woods, age 69, of 700 McElyea Road, Mountain City, TN passed away on Friday, May 11, 2012 in the Holston Valley Medical Center. He was born November 26, 1942 to the late Abner Woods and Mary Idell Rickman Woods. He attended Ackerson Creek Christian Church. Jim enjoyed woodworking, playing guitar, and working with small engines. He was retired from Lenoir Furniture. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Sam Woods, Walt Woods, Henry Woods, and Jet Woods; two sisters, Sue Ward and Betty Simpson.

Barbara Jean Lipford, age 69, of 938 Crossroads Drive went to her heavenly home on April 24, 2012. She had battled a long case of Alzheimer’s. She attended the Ackerson Creek Church of Christ. Barbara loved to travel and shop and spend time with family. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was born to the late Garney and Ruby Gentry. She is preceded in death by her husband, Fred Lipford.

She was born May 14, 1931 to the late Sherman Dean Lowe and Evelyn Watson Lowe. Chloe was a faithful and dedicated member of Doe Valley Baptist Church. Her hobbies included crocheting and quilting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Billy Dale “Jack” Roberts; three brothers, Roger, John and L.D. Lowe and one sister, Gloria Gay Lowe.

He lived most of his life in the Bristol area and served his country as a member of the US Army. Keri Kassandra Osborne Scovern, age 46, of Hudson, North Carolina and formerly of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, May 4, 2012 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was born on February 14, 1966 to the late Edgar Ray Osborne and Gladys June Sexton Osborne. Prior to her illness, she loved spending time with her family and especially her granddaughter. She also liked being at the lake and enjoyed music.

Mildred Jean Cowie, age 80, of Laurel Bloomery, Tennessee, passed away on Sunday, May 6, 2012 at her residence, surrounded by her family. She was born on May 14, 1931 in St. Catherine’s Hospital of Brooklyn, NY, to the late Otto Hettesheimer and Elizabeth Knoerzer Hettesheimer. Mildred attended Point Jefferson High School and graduated as a nurse in 1951. She was an intensive care nurse at the Community Hospital for several years. Mildred later attended Broward County Vocational School, where she graduated with her Pre-K Teacher certification. She taught preschool in Broward County, Florida and had also been a Girl Scout Leader for 20 years. Mildred was a member of Pleasant Home Baptist Church since 1980 and had taught Sunday school until 2008.

He was a son of the late Donald and Geneva Belle Edmisten Johnson. Allen had worked at Blue Ridge Shoe Company, school bus driver, sanitation truck driver for the town of Mountain City. He loved farming, mowing his yard, word search books, and going to church. Allen was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church and also attended Corinth Baptist and other churches. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Anna Pearl Waters Johnson, April 14, 2003; an infant brother; and infant grandson ,T.J. Johnson in Feb. of 1995.

Mr. Cole was a graduate of Hampton Elementary School, Elizabethton High School in 1944 and the University of Tennessee in 1948 with a degree in Business Administration. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II having volunteered in 1944. Mr. Cole worked as Sales Manager at Courtesy Motors Company for twenty years and was an Automobile Dealer and Owner of C & T Volkswagen-Subaru for eighteen years. He retired in 1988. Mr. Cole became a member of East Side Baptist Church at the age of twelve. He was a member of the Brownlow Scalf Sunday School Class.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday March 22nd at 11:00 a.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Dr. Frank Gagliano officiating. Interment followed in Robertson County Memorial Gardens. Mr. Eggers was born June 10, 1929 in Beaver Dam, N.C. to the late Harrison Clay and Rachel Hagaman Eggers. He was a retired welder with Catapillar Equipment and was a member of South Haven Baptist Church. Mr. Eggers was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during the Korean Conflict. Anna Mary Stoltzfus Huyard, 76, of 541 New York Avenue, Harrisonburg, Virginia, quietly passed away Thursday morning March 8, 2012. She was born in Gap, Pennsylvania August 13, 1935. Anna Mary was the daughter of the late Benjamin and Hannah Stoltzfus and married David S. Huyard November 10, 1955 as Old Order Amish. Three years later they joined the Mennonite Church and in 1966 were assigned to pastor a congregation in northeastern Tennessee where they launched a local and international radio ministry. Anna Mary conducted the children’s radio program for twelve years and received regular personal letters of appreciation from children and adults. The Huyards moved to Virginia in 1985 and operated Huyard’s Country Kitchen from 1987-1999 in Dayton Farmers Market.

She graduated from Steed Business College and worked for Mountain Electric Co-op until the birth of her four sons. She devoted her life to raising them. She grew up in Pandora and was saved at a young age and attended Bethel Baptist Church. She and her family moved their membership to First Baptist Church in Mountain City in 1967.

Mr. Grayson was a member of First United Methodist Church and a United States Army veteran having served in Korea. He loved old time music, was a master fiddler and a master craftsman. Over the years he played with various well known musicians including Doc Watson and Tom Ashley and his Tennessee Merry Makers. Frank is listed in the music archives at East Tennessee State University and Appalachian State University. Louise M. Shull, age 92, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2012. She was a tall woman among women. Louise will long be remembered for her gentle ways and strength of character. She had a gracious manner and she always knew the correct things to do and say at all times. She was the daughter of the late Thomas S. McQueen and Ruth Wills McQueen. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Earl Shull, and two brothers, Barton and Norman McQueen; and a son-in-law, Junior Brown. She loved quilting, reading, canning, gardening, flowers, cooking and had cooked for everybody in the community. Louise was a former teacher at Oak Grove Elementary, a member of Neva Ruritan and Neva PTA. She gave land to Neva Volunteer Fire Department, Pleasant View Christian Church and to Mountain City Dog Pound. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church where she was a GA leader, youth teacher, VBS teacher and on the historical committee.

Boyd Max Dowell passed away at home on December 13, 2011. He was born July 31, 1934 in Shouns, Tennessee to George Harrison Dowell and Verda Stewart Dowell - the last of their four children. The tragedy of his mother's death five months after his birth meant that Max's Aunt Mary Stewart McEwen and her husband Sam McEwen aka Poppy “reared” him in the new town of Butler, about 10 miles from where his dad resided. The McEwens had a strong penchant for education, and under their roof, Max began a distinguished career as a scholar. It always impressed his children greatly that he skipped the second grade! By the time he got to Johnson County High School, he was on his way to becoming senior class president and valedictorian. He also led his senior class in raising enough money to send several members on a trip to Washington, D.C.

He was born to the late Lee Willard Snow and Lorene Louise Pottinger on March 25, 1931, in Springfield, MO. After graduating from Central High School in Springfield, Bud enlisted into the Marine Corp in 1946, where he was a cook. Bud was honorably discharged in 1950. After the Marine Corp, he met his first wife, Virginia May Esterly. They were married in 1953. They moved to West Covina, CA where their son Gregory Lee was born in 1957 and their daughter Linda Louise was born in 1959. The family moved to Sarcoxie, MO in 1962.

In addition to her parents, Frances was preceded in death by two sons, Douglas Wayne Hutto and Michael Edwin Hutto and one sister, Doris ‘Dolly’ Morefield. Frances was a member of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary Post 61, where she was the chairman of the Poppy Committee. She was an honorary member of the Johnson County Honor Guard. She was born in Shouns, Tennessee on June 30, 1913, the daughter of the late Tilman Emerson and Cora Payne Simcox. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Brown; an infant son; three brothers, Roscoe, Dana, and Selmer Simcox and two sisters, Dessie Taylor and Lora Hammons. Ida was formerly employed by the Johnson County School System as a cook for Shouns Elementary School for a number of years and was an avid gardener.

Carroll Ray Davis, age 88 of Talking Rock, GA passed away on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Wildwood Health Care Center. Mr. Davis was born on February 23, 1923 in Wisconsin to Raymond Henry Davis and Nina Adeline Slater Davis. He dedicated his life to his family, his church, and to the Lord. He loved to take his family on summer long camping trips, and was a Pathfinder leader. He spent many years as a religious book salesman for his church. He moved to Butler, TN in 1974 and helped to build the Mountain City Seventh-Day Adventist Church where he was a charter member and head elder.

He was born on March 15, 1922 to the late Arthur and Jane Main Reece. In addition to his parents, Dolphus was preceded in death by siblings, Luther Reece, Floy Reece, Lorettie Martin, Thelma Wallace, Ollie Robinson, Ethel Reece, Ella May Combs and Coy Reece. Billy enrolled in ROTC at East Tennessee State University and graduated with a degree in engineering. Upon graduation he went into the US Army where he served as a 1st Lieutenant at Anniston Army Depot in Anniston, Alabama.

Harold was a member of Dewey Christian Church, Mountain City, TN. He was an artist-painter with work exhibited in the United States and Europe. His work was viewed at nine shows in Europe and four shows at the Cottler Gallery, New York, NY. He won a bronze metal in Paris, France in the world show on painting of rock band. Mr. Wright was also Top Inspector for the Bailey Meter Company in Cleveland, Ohio. Mr. Wright was preceded in death by his parents Edward and Flora Hay Wright and several other brother-in-laws and sisters-in-laws. He was the son-in-law of Brownlow and Lizzie Reece.

Lona Allen Brown passed away October 23rd at her home in Hood River, Oregon at the age of 93. She was born February 17, 1918 in Shouns, Tennessee to Jim and Ida Allen. She married Charles Brown in 1933; they moved to Parkdale in 1959 and lived there for several years and then moved to Hood River. Charles passed away in 1991. She is survived by her children, Raymond Brown of Mountain City, Tennessee, Bud Brown of Mt. Hood, Oregon, Gene Brown of Mountain City, Tennessee, Helen Funderburk of Olympia, Washington and Patsy Paulin of Mt. He was 80 years of age. Mr. Howard had learned how to sing from his mother when he was six years old, and over the course of his lifetime, he entertained tens of thousands of people. He performed at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall and the Newport Folk Festival (in the 1960s), to the Smithsonian in Washington, D.C., and the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Tenn., in the 1980s. In the 1990s and into the 2000s, Mr. Howard played either alone or with Doc Watson and others at Merlefest in North Wilkesboro, N.C. He also performed at Studio One at ETSU’s public radio station WETS; the Down Home in Johnson City; Old Butler Days; and at the Cranberry Festival in Shady Valley, Tenn.

David Kenneth ‘Ken’ Kitchell, Jr., age 84, of Mountain City, Tennessee, passed away on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Johnson City Medical Center following a courageous struggle of ten years with the after effects of a stroke. He was born in Miami, Florida on February 17, 1927 to the late David Kenneth Kitchell, Sr. and Callie Belle Carpenter Kitchell. Ken was a military man, having served 27 years in the Army Airborne and earning the rank of CSM (Command Sgt. Major). Following his military career, Ken was a corporate officer for Wackenhut Securities in Miami, Florida. He and his family moved to Mountain City, Tennessee in 1978. Ken served as City Manager of Mountain City from April 1981 to April 1983. Retirement did not suit him, so Ken proceeded to serve as his own contractor building his own home and four town houses on the golf course in Mountain City.

Richard E. Skeens, of New Smyrna Beach, passed away Saturday, November 6, 2010 in West Virginia. While hunting in West Virginia, Rick suffered a heart attack and passed peacefully one week later. Della Marie Maxwell, age 96, of Mountain City, went home to be with her Savior on May 22, 2011 surrounded by her loving family. Della was born on August 2, 1914 to Winton Patrick and Amanda Bauguess Patrick of Creston, NC. She married Truman Maxwell in 1939 and moved to Mountain City where she lived for the rest of her life as a loving wife and mother. Della was of the Baptist faith, having received the Lord as her Savior at an early age. She enjoyed traveling to other church’s singing. She loved her family, cooking, sewing, embroidery, reading, watching TV and in early years raising her garden and preserving the fruits and vegetables.

Donna Lynn Carver, age 37, of Flag Pond, TN passed away at her residence on Tuesday, May 17, 2011. She was born February 22, 1974 to Bill Vance and Margie Ellen Snodgrass Vance. She had lived in Unicoi County most of her life. Donna was preceded in death by her father in 2010.

Dora Elizabeth (Betty) Hawks, age 82, of Shady Valley, Tennessee, passed away on Saturday, May 21, 2011 at her residence. She was born July 24, 1928 in West Virginia to the late Famous Jack and Bessie Hendricks Sexton. Dora enjoyed visiting with friends, going to church and the outdoors. She liked sitting in her rocker on her porch, going to Wal-Mart and in their day, she and her husband Marvin would go to the store for ice cream and pass the time away. She was a member of Shady Valley Baptist Church.

Stout, age 76, of the Beaver Dam Community of Vilas, North Carolina, went home to be with the Lord following an extended illness on Thursday, May 19, 2011 at the Watauga Medical Center, Boone, North Carolina. He was born on September 26, 1934 to the late Wayne Victor Stout and Nora Elizabeth May Stout. In addition to his parents, Farris was preceded in death by a daughter, Crystal Dawn Stout; sisters: Charlotte Rominger and Ruby Green and brothers: Bruce, Elmer and Paul. He was of the Baptist faith.

A native of Johnson County, Tennessee, he was born on November 24, 1948 to Sue Lowe Roberts and the late Hugo Roberts. Jerry worked for years in the furniture industry and enjoyed woodworking in his spare time also. He also loved to fish.

Gary McCloud, age 41, of 3018 Highway 421 North, Mountain City, Tennessee passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011. He was a son of the Lorraine McCloud and the late Bill McCloud. Gary was a member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and an employee of Iron Mountain Construction. His hobbies included deer hunting and he was an avid Tennessee football fan. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Leah Moretz and John Moretz and paternal grandfather Harry McCloud and paternal grandmother Hazel McCloud.

Margie lived in Shady Valley, TN for most of her life before moving to Bristol in recent years. She was a former employee of Raytheon but her greatest love was homemaking, cooking, and caring for her family. She loved bowling and was a former league bowler. Margie was a member of West Hills Christian Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Harry Hutchinson, in 1978, and by her second husband, Clarence Shoemaker, in 2009.

Robert Harold “Bob” Bunten, born May 12, 1944 passed away on the morning of April 25th, 2011 just as the Sun was rising, after a long battle with lung cancer, surrounded by his family, went home to be with his Lord. Bob was a native of Mountain City, TN, graduate of Johnson County High School, class of 1962. He then attended Bristol Speedwriting and Secretarial School where he successfully graduated. Beginning in 1967 Bob spent 42 years working as office manager for what is now known as Johnson County Funeral Home and Hux-Lipford Funeral Home. He was a retired employee of Daniel Boone Inn where he worked as employment manager for 30 years. He was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church where he was organist for many years, was a member of the Johnson County Jaycees, Lions Club and was past president of the Mountain City Rotary Club receiving the Paul Harris award in 2009. He was preceded in death by his parents Paul and Doris Bunten.

On April 8, 2011 at 11:30 p.m., Mary Jean Todd, age 84, of Mountain City, TN and formerly of Vero Beach, FL, left to be with her husband, mother, father, brother and daughter. She passed peacefully at home with her daughter and granddaughter at her side. She will always be remembered as a kind and loving soul, who never met a stranger that didn’t admire her honest and caring ways. In addition to her father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Gerald McQueen, an uncle, Bill Stanley, paternal grandparents, Loyd and Cornie Sluder, and maternal grandparents, Alfred and Judy Stanley. Born on February 19, 1953 in Cumberland County, he was the son of the late Otis Luther Crowder and Flora Alice Peterson Crowder. Archie was a forest ranger by profession, and he spent many hours as an educational volunteer speaking to school children about forestry. He loved nature and all things related to forestry. He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church in Smithfield where he served as a deacon and elder. He was active in Boy Scouts for over twenty years. Archie was a pilot and loved to fly. He was a loving and caring son, husband, father, brother, and uncle and he will be greatly missed.

In addition to her parents, Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, William A. ‘Willie’ Forrester, who passed away on September 28, 2001; a son, Mike Forrester; grandsons: Steve Blevins and Chris Mahan; a brother, an aunt; an uncle and a special caretaker, Mae Garland. As a child, Dorothy and her brother Charles were cared for by their Aunt and Uncle Fannie and Oscar Blankenbeckler in the Pleasant Valley Community.

Mr. Edwin Earl Brown, age 87 of Conyers, died Wednesday, March 16, 2011. He was born in Johnson County, TN on June 14, 1923 to the late Robert B. and Hattie Adams Brown, and raised in Mountain City, TN. He was preceded in death by his wife, Alice Wagner Brown and sister, Virginia Phillippi. He is survived by his daughter, Jeanne Rue, Covington; grandchildren, Michael and Melody Rue, Conyers, Lisa and Michael Dickson, Covington; great-grandchildren, Shane Rue, Mikey Rue, Amanda Rue, and Austin Rue; sister, Evelyn Blevins, Charlotte, NC. Earl served as a Coxswain in the United States Navy during WWII. He served in the North Africa Campaign, in Italy, and participated in the third wave in Normandy on Omaha and Utah Beaches. He was a Master Mason of Shelby Lodge No. 162 in Bristol, VA. Earl was a former member of Honey Creek Country Club and was an avid golfer and general aviation pilot. Family will receive friends Saturday, March 26, 2011 from 2 until 4 p.m. at the funeral home. A private family interment will be held at GA National Cemetery in Canton, GA.

Theodore E. Vannoy, age 90, of Damascus Virginia passed away Monday, March 14, 2011 at his residence. He was a life long resident of Washington County, Virginia and was a son of the late Walter and Agatha Vannoy. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corp, serving in World War II. Mrs. Simerly was a full time volunteer at Westwood Retirement Center in Fort Walton Beach. Marjorie Stump, age 98 of 288 W E Neatherly Road, Mountain City, Tennessee passed away Friday, January 14, 2011 after a brief illness in the Mountain City Care and Rehabilitation Center, 919 Medical Park Drive, Mountain City, Tennessee. Ms. Stump was the daughter of the late W. L. and Ellen Tester Neatherly. She was a member of the First Christian Church. She was a homemaker. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her spouse, Paul Stump in 1992. Two brothers, Earl Neatherly and James R. Neatherly. Two sisters, Christine E. Morefield and Mabel C. Gentry.

Mr. Preston “Pret” Williams, 89, formerly of Butler went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 14, 2011 in the Hermitage Health Center following an extended illness. He was the son of the late Andy and Emma Williams and was born in Carter County. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Anna Mae Oliver Williams; two brothers, D.C. Williams and Earnest Williams; and one sister, Amanda Jane Perry. He was retired from Burlington Industries and was of the Baptist faith.

Willard Ray “Whitey” Pope, age 82 of 1170 Bryan Davis Road, Creston, North Carolina passed away Wednesday morning, January 12, 2011, in Ashe Memorial Hospital. He was a son of the late Ed and Pansy Blevins Pope. Mr. Pope was of the Baptist faith. He was employed at Thomasville Furniture for 22 years and also worked in the sawmill industry for 30 years. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and playing the guitar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Anna Pope, and three brothers, Thurman, Russ and Johnny Pope.

Hassie Leondas Dugger Wolfe, age 86, of Mountain City, Tennessee and formerly of Butler, Tennessee, passed away on Monday, January 3, 2011 at the Mountain City Care Center. She was born on October 14, 1924 in Butler, Tennessee, to the late Thomas Clayton Dugger and Betty Augusta Arney Dugger. In addition to her parents, Hassie was preceded in death by her husband, William Lawrence Wolfe; one son, Jim Wolfe; sisters: Selma McGuire and Pearl Brown; brothers: Carl Dugger, Glen Dugger, Dayton Dugger and grandchild, Janie Wolfe. Hassie was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and loved helping people in her community and was loved by all and will truly be missed. She was a lifelong member of Sugar Grove Baptist Church.

Dot Crosswhite, age 95, formerly of Mountain City, passed away Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Asbury Place Nursing Home in Johnson City, TN. She was the daughter of the late Roanzy and Mary Arney Long. Dot was a native of Johnson County and a member of Bethel Baptist Church. She loved to cook and enjoyed company. Besides her parents she was proceeded in death by a daughter, Pat Isaacs, and a son, John Crosswhite, four brothers, Lon Long, Mitch Long, Ed Long, and Bea Long, three sisters, Stella Roberts, Elsie Fredrick, and Reba Greene.

Mona Lisa Brown, age 24, of Butler, Tennessee, formerly of Elizabethton, Tennessee, where she had lived for 12 years, went to her Heavenly Home on Monday, December 27, 2010 at her residence. She was born in Boone, North Carolina on March 14, 1986 to Delores Brown of Butler, Tennessee and the late George Robert Brown, who passed away on October 13, 2009. In addition to her ‘Daddy’, Mona was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, ‘Dranny and Poppie’, Jake and Cora Lee McFadden; paternal grandparents, ‘Granny and Grandpa’, Betty and Claude Brown and her cousin, Robbie McFadden.
