Hilliard discussed the Duck Dynasty "Quacktastrophe"By: Lacy Hilliard
While the world was quacking about the Duck Dynasty controversy, in which Head Duck in Charge, Phil Robertson made distasteful and hateful remarks in an interview with GQ Magazine; a few other things happened throughout the world that I find considerably more noteworthy.
Just as the GQ article was going to print, Army Staff Sergeant Alex A. Viola was losing his life in Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was 29-years-old and a native of Keller, Texas and was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne). He lost his life when an improvised explosive device (IED) detonated, destroying his patrol unit and cashing in on the promise the young soldier made to his country.
As social networking sites continued to molt over Robertsonís comments, science was publishing findings that illuminate a link between congenital heart disease and hypoglycemia. The new research could help develop preventative care and create a better quality of life for those that suffer from congenital heart disease. Science also learned more about how Alzheimerís attacks the brain, urging them one step closer to a solution and a world free of a horribly debilitating disease.
While the media continued to bill the Duck Travesty, children sat in a Syrian classroom and wondered if their fate may be similar to that of an innocent man that was blown away right in front of them earlier this week. And as the country waddled further and further from the truth of reality, members of the Peace Corps were providing clean water to three schools in Zambia while others were providing vaccines to children in war-torn regions of Africa.
So what the duck is everyone fighting about? Is the anger for an agenda-pushing journalist baiting a less-than-classy Duck Commander into answering a question that everyone already knew the answer to? Why do so many rally for those that donít need a mob of supporters but those without a voice are rarely given so much as an octave? Have we become so easily distracted? Do you think Mr. Robertson is destitute? Perhaps he can use his millions of dollars to dry his tears.
I challenge all those that devoted time and energy to posting about, thinking about, and being angry about the quacktastrophe, to pledge to devote the same amount of time to furthering the greater good of your community, your country, your world. If you canít do that, then consider using Ďduckí tape on your mouth and/or fingers and remember what your mother said; ďIf you donít have anything nice to say, donít say anything at all.Ē Hate under the guise of religion is still hate.
