As students and teachers leap back into the school scene after a long, green summer, the Mountain City Elementary library hosted the first Gamma Mu Chicka Chicka Boom Boom reading on Friday, August 15, 2014. This reading, similar to the previous year’s Soentpiet readings, introduced the children to the works of the best-selling children’s author John Archambault, who will be visiting Johnson County during the public library’s Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Bash on August 26th.

Raised in California, John Archambault has written and co-authored more than 20 books, including the beloved children’s classic Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, which was dedicated to his son. Over the years, Archambault has won numerous awards, such as the Parent’s Choice Award, the American Library Association’s (ALA) Notable Children’s Book Award, and more.

In addition to the ever popular Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, Archambault has written (as well as co-authored with Bill Martin Jr.) many titles, e.g. Knots on a Counting Rope, Barn Dance, Listen to the Rain, The Magic Pumpkin, and Boom Chicka Rock.

An exceptional children’s author, poet, musician, and speaker, Archambault travels all over the United States to perform at libraries, schools, conferences, and other locations. Very soon, the last Tuesday in August to be exact, he’ll be stopping in Johnson County to meet with children and parents at Heritage Hall.

During the Friday reading at the Mountain City Elementary library, retired teacher and Gamma Mu member, Teresa Mullen read Chicka Chicka Boom Boom to one of the Pre-K classes. Gathered around Mrs. Mullen as she read, the boys and girls sat on a blue alphabet rug, listening to the rhythmic flow of words and exploring the vibrant illustrations with young, eager eyes. Although there were a few “wigglers,” this Pre-K class proved to be a wonderful audience, a group of energetic and curious little students enjoying a good read in the storytelling corner.

Friday’s Gamma Mu visit to Mountain City Elementary marked the beginning of the Archambault readings, which will take place August 18th through the 22nd at all the local elementary schools for grades Pre-K through sixth.

According to Gamma Mu and the Johnson County Public Library, the schedule for John Archambault’s upcoming visit and the Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Bash is as follows:

On August 26th and 27th, Archambault will be presenting at Heritage Hall for the Johnson County Elementary schools at 9 am and 1 pm.

Also on Tuesday, August 26th, the guest author will be presenting at 7 pm in Heritage Hall at the tail end of the much anticipated Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Bash (4:30pm-6:30pm) held at the local library, which will include games, face-painting, food, bounce houses, book sales, a silent auction, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library Magic Bus and a very special visit from Tennessee’s First Lady, Crissy Haslam.
